After gathering an idea of the word’s meaning from your own study, it’s a good time to check the conclusions of other scholars and reference works. Here are some free online places to look.

While archive.org makes these resources freely available, please note:

  • to check out books you must create a free account with archive.org;
  • they do not allow copy and paste;
  • they can be checked out only for one hour at a time (but they can immediately be re-checked out when your hour expires.

Greek-English lexicon of the New Testament : based on semantic domains

Kittel’s Theological Dictionary of the New Testament : abridged in one volume (TDNT)

A Greek-English lexicon of the New Testament, and other early Christian literature; by Bauer, Walter,

Liddell and Scott’s Greek-English lexicon, abridged : the little Liddell by Liddell, Henry George. You need to know Greek to use.

Vine’s Expository Dictionary of Old Testament and New Testament Words (PDF)

Theological wordbook of the Old Testament by Harris, R. Laird One of the best OT lexicons for laymen.

Theological wordbook of the Old Testament – no time limit on use and does allow copy and paste. Can be downloaded as PDF. 

Nelson’s Expository Dictionary of the Old Testament by Unger, Merrill. Indexed by English word and then any related Hebrew nouns or verbs.
